How to Pair (Great) Wine With McDonald’s

New York Magazine featured an excerpt of Big Macs & Burgundy, Sommelier and contributing wine writer Vanessa Price’s new book, which includes a mention of Quinta do Noval. The featured section shares amusing context about Happy Meals before delving into a few key McDonald’s menu pairing recommendations.

Price suggests pairing McDonald’s Hot Caramel Sundae with Quinta do Noval 20 Year Tawny Port. She begins to offer a bit of background on the styles of Port and progression as they age to develop “more deeply in complexity, richness, and unctuousness.” As it relates to this specific match up, she makes a strong argument to try this at home.

“Something happens at that 20-year level that makes Port the ideal first mate for McDonald’s Hot Caramel Sundae. They both share that creamy-soft, toasted butter-and-sugar luxuriousness, and the 20-year’s layered dried fruit and sweet baking spices melt so seamlessly into the hot caramel, you’ll have trouble discerning which is which. I suggest you only try this pairing if you’re ready to embark on a lifelong obsession with Port.” Read the full excerpt HERE

One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard.
